Spider-Man PS4: 7 Combat Tips To Help You Dominate Each Encounter

Spider-Man PS4: 7 Combat Tips To Help You Dominate Each Encounter

Want to crush those Taskmaster challenges? We got ya covered.

It’s rare that a AAA game lives up to and exceeds the hype surrounding it, but PS4 exclusive Marvel’s Spider-Man is one such example. The game is amazing, and you should absolutely be playing it.

And now that it’s been out for almost two weeks, we’ve had plenty of time to play this thing to death, uncovering all sorts of secrets and perfecting the art of Spider-Man’s meaty, fluid combat system. As a result, those looking to ace all the Taskmaster challenges, complete every enemy hideout and attend to each street crime should be looking to maximize the potential of the deep moveset present within the game.

While Spider-Man isn’t as difficult as the Arkham series, it’s got a handful of annoying enemy types (who else hates Brutes?), and certain encounters can be tricky, especially if you’re looking to attain a high score in a combat challenge.

On the plus side, you’ve got more than enough options at your fingertips to make the entire game a breeze – it’s just a case of uncovering those useful tips that might not be immediately obvious while playing normally.

7. Permanently Stay In The Air For Safer, Uninterrupted Combos

Though it’s perfectly functional, Spider-Man’s basic, ground-level combat using the square button to mash out attacks is probably the least effective (and least fun) way to play the game.

Instead, Spidey is much more deadly when he’s off the ground, keeping his distance in order to avoid those tight groups of enemies that like to sucker punch him… a lot. There’s even a whole section of the moves list dedicated purely to aerial combat, as if you needed more of a hint.

Simply keeping Spidey airborne makes combat much more manageable, and it’s not even hard to do. Hold square to attack an enemy and bring them into the air for a couple of punches, and when Spidey knocks them away, hold triangle to yank anotherenemy skyward (requires the Air Yank skill) and give them a few knuckle sandwiches too. Rinse and repeat these button presses and you can take out roughly three enemies without even touching the floor. When you land, just start the process again.

Staying off the ground has several advantages. One, you’ll be further away from enemy grenades, making them easier to dodge. Two, since you only have one enemy to deal with, there’s less of a chance your combo will be interrupted. And three, aerial combat generates more Focus.

Pair this method with the Bullet Proof or Titanium Alloy Plates suit power and you’ll become an indestructible force to be reckoned with.

6. Match Suit Powers And Mods To Each Encounter

Now hopefully this doesn’t sound too obvious to mention, but due to the lack of a loadout/class save system, it’s all too easy to breeze through the game without ever changing your suit power or suit mods.

This is fine if you just want to power through the story, but if you want to beat Spider-Man’s many, many combat side-missons, you’re going to want to start tailoring your build to match each type of encounter.

For fights against groups of basic enemies, stand still to lure them close and then use Web Blossom to instantly take most of them out. For mods, use Full Charge Capacitors and Webbed Striker (increase damage when health is over 100, and web attacks generate more focus) to finish the rest off super quickly.

For fights against lots of gun-toting foes who like to keep their distance (flying Sable soldiers, for example), switch to defensive mods like those that reduce bullet damage, and use the Battle Focus suit power to provide extra health (this power is also great for boss fights where generating Focus is tough).

For pure stealth encounters, this mod setup is a must: Silent Step, Bio Scanner, and Scavenger. This way, you can refill gadgets with Web Strike Takedowns, track enemies for longer, and make it easier to stay in stealth mode.

The point is, be sure to carefully choose what you take into battle. If you’re struggling, try switching things up to address the problem you’re having. There’s no point having stealth mods in a combat arena, or gadget refill mods against a boss, for example.

5. Easily Nullify Shield Enemies With A Web Bomb

When the game first introduces you to shield enemies, you’re told to attack them with square, hit circle to slide through their legs, and use square again to attack them from behind – a “dodge under” move.

But in the thick of combat when the screen is packed with enemies, this can be a fiddly manoeuvre to pull off (if another enemy attacks you mid-move, Spidey will often slide under them instead), and worse, it takes some time, leaving you vulnerable to grenade attacks. Even when you unlock the skill that allows you to yank shields away from enemies, it’s too slow and finicky to use when combat is in full swing and things get hectic.

A far easier way to deal with shield enemies is to quickly use a gadget. The game tells you that these foes cannot be attacked from the front, and that’s true, but only with fists. With certain gadgets, you can hit them from any angle and it’ll work just fine.

The best way to take them down is by using the web bomb. Simply get the shield enemy near a wall or other surface, tap R1, and watch them helplessly stick to it, instantly removing them from the fight.

The concussive blast and suspension matrix are also effective – experiment to see which works best for you.

4. Web Strike Takedowns Don’t Break Stealth, And They’re An Instant KO

There are a ton of Arkham-esque stealth sections in Spider-Man, where you’re tasked with clearing out a fixed area of enemies as sneakily as possible.

And sure, you can use all sorts of moves in these situations like Perch Takedowns and Stealth Takedowns, but by far, the easiest – and quickest – way to complete stealth encounters is with Web Strike Takedowns.

This move is mapped to the triangle button, and will have Spidey using his webs to zip to an enemy for an instant KO. This attack seems quite aggressive and loud so you’d be forgiven for thinking that it breaks stealth, but it actually doesn’t (as long as your target enemy isn’t too close to another one, of course), meaning you can spam it as much as you like.

It’s also super easy to use. Aim, tap triangle, done. You can use it from perches and from the ground, and you don’t even have to be behind an enemy to pull it off, like you do with Stealth Takedowns.

Isolating foes and taking them down with Web Strike is not only easy, but it can shave valuable time off each stealth encounter. This makes acing those Taskmaster challenges less difficult, and it’s also good for those who aren’t fans of stealth and just want to get through it as quickly as possible.

3. How To Get Gold In Taskmaster Combat Challenges

Unlike the combat challenges found in the Arkham games, the Taskmaster challenges in Spider-Man don’t require you to put as much effort into chaining together intricate combos full of gadgets and special takedown moves.

Rather, the only thing that really matters here if you want that that shiny gold rating – in both the stealth and combat challenges – is your time.

That in mind, don’t worry about pulling off tons of Spidey’s fancy moves. That’s not necessary. Just defeat each enemy as quickly as you possibly can. For combat challenges, spam gadgets like the Impact Web, Web Bomb and your basic Web Shooter – combined with the Battle Tech and Webbed Striker suit mods, which will generate focus for gadget and web attacks – to clear out enemies quickly. If done right, you’ll also get a nice health bonus.

(Also, try not to use any triangle + circle finishing moves while on the ground – some of the animations are quite lengthy. Instead, only use them while Spidey is airborne, as the airborne finisher is over rather quickly).

For stealth challenges, obey the same principle. Use the Web Strike Takedown method we discussed in the last entry, and pepper in the occasional Trip Mine and Impact Web. Avoid Stealth and Perch Takedowns; they just take too long.

2. Fire Trip Mines Directly At Enemies For Easier Takedowns

Spidey’s Trip Mines are introduced as a stealth-only gadget during the main story, but they’re a lot more versatile than the basic way the game tells you to use them – fire at a wall, wait for an enemy to walk past – would have you believe.

For starters, they’re also pretty great in regular combat, not just stealth. If you’re out of Web Bombs or Impact Webs, select Trip Mines and tap R1 to fire one directly at an enemy, and they’ll either be pulled to a wall, or will stick to another enemy, taking bothof them out at once (there’s a trophy for doing this 10 times).

Alternatively, pepper the combat area with Trip Mines before the fighting starts. Then, if you’re struggling (or simply want to pick a few enemies off) move the fisticuffs to the mine-laced part of the room and watch them activate!

Lastly – in stealth encounters – it can get quite annoying having to line up your Trip Mine directly with an enemy’s path (or if the enemy is stationary, landing it in the perfect spot on the wall next to them can prove tough if you aren’t at the right angle).

Instead, just fire the mine straight onto your foe.

1. Defeat Brutes With A Couple Of Button Presses

Brutes are a pain. Not only are they strong, but they’re surprisingly nimble, able to run up to you at an alarmingly fast rate and deliver a powerful punch. Let your guard down for the briefest of moments, and you’re toast.

The game advises you to use throwables and web attacks to subdue them before going in with your fists, but not only does this take time, it leaves you vulnerable to rear attacks while you’re busy punching the daylights out of this one dude.

Instead, make things a lot easier by using this quick combo when near a wall or other surface, like a vehicle: press square to punch, circle to slide through the Brute’s legs (so they’re between you and the wall), then R1 to blast them with an Impact Web or a Web Bomb.

They’ll instantly stick to the wall and you’ll have saved a lot of time and stress.

Brutes normally run at you, leaving other enemies behind, so you should have the necessary space to pull this off. You can also just go right in with the final step of that combo, assuming your Brute is already in position.

As an added bonus, the Web Bomb will take out any nearby smaller enemies, too. It’s win/win.
